Tanning tips

For a step by step guide to applying self tan .... Click here

Ok so if you are new to tanning this section is a must. Read my top tips for getting a great tan.

What to do before you Tan?

1. Exfoliate - this is the key to getting an even tan and lasts longer. Tanning lotions and spray tan all work by dying the top layers of dead skill cells a brown colour. When you exfoliate you remove any loose dead skin cells. Doing this before a tan will ensure that you have a smooth base for the tan to be applied to. It will also help to make your tan last longer. Tips to Make Your Tan Last

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! - there you have it, it is that simple. After your tan apply a body moisturizer daily to keep your skins hydration levels up. My only tip is don't use a moisturizer that contains exfoliating properties. Some may have hydroxy acids which, for daily use are fantastic…. But not so good if you are wanting to keep your skin cells firmly in place for the week of your tan.

Stay away from swimming pools - I have experienced this first hand. When I first discovered Fake Bake spray tan, I had one done for the Christmas Holiday break so I would look bronzed and then wouldn’t be tempted to lie in the sun. So I turned up to Noosa looking lovely and bronzed until I took a few dips in the pool. As I also love the water, after staying in the chlorine for extended periods my beautiful tan washed away. Devastating, so unless you want to get rid of your tan, stay away from the swimming pool. Opt for a swim at the beach.

Tips for removing fake tan

Ok there is nothing worse than a bad fake tan….. I have been there too. I have a good escape though, as I just tell everyone I am doing research and stay indoors! Now if you have ended up with a bad tan there are a few things you can do to lessen the look, but for the most part you may be stuck with it for a few days.

Do not despair, I did say you could lessen the look.

1. Orange palms or soles of your feet?

Using a mix of Bicarb Soda and Vinegar, rub the mixture into your skin in a circular motion, letting the granules act as an exfoliant and then wash if off. Now it may take a few goes, but it will lighten the tan so persist with it.

2. Streaks

Have you applied your tan and missed areas? Maybe the expert missed areas? If you have streaks or missing sections, my advise is to try and fill in the gaps. If you have time to wait 8 hours for the tan to develop, try applying the lotion to the areas missed, don’t worry if it over laps a little, it will look better than white next to brown. If an expert did your tan, call the salon and ask then to fit you in and fix your tan. You shouldn’t have to pay for this.

If you are strapped for time, my tip is using a bronzer to fill in the gaps and even out the look. The best way to achieve this is by mixing a bronzing powder with a little body moisturizer and then apply it to your skin. It should make you look less strange and help to camouflage a bad tan.

3. Face too brown

If your face looks too tanned, my tip is to use a good quality exfoliant. Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant is fantastic as it can be used on all skin types and it contains hydroxy acids. Hydroxy acids give a deeper exfoliation so you should be able to remove a lot of those brown dead skin cells. You don’t have to use Dermalogica, any hydroxy acid based or enzyme base exfoliant should do the job.
