There are a few different exfoliating techniques you can use to prep your skin before you tan, my favourite has to be the at home salt scrub
1. At home salt scrub
Salt scrubs are fantastic and you can opt for a professional salt scrub if you prefer, but if you would like the same result at home I can show you how.
I have been telling my clients to do this for years, it is so easy and gives fantastic results. If you have ever had a salt scrub at a Spa or a Salon, you are familiar with how fantastic your skin feels after you have this done. Well you can also do this at home using ingredients in your kitchen cupboard… No I am not crazy! All you need is some olive oil (any quality) or grape seed oil, and table salt. You can also use sugar if you prefer.
You use about 2 table spoons of oil and then add your salt until you get a nice mixture of the two. Now if you want to jazz it up, add some essential oils, lemongrass is great as it is de-toxing and also smells great.
To use your scrub it is probably wise to apply it in the shower, before you turn the water on, as it can be messy. Work the scrub over your entire body, except your face… Never use this on your face, and then just simply wash off. You will be left silky and smooth without it costing a fortune. Any scrub left over you can save for your next exfoliation.
Do this the day before your tan, as an oily layer will be left on your skin that will act as a barrier to your tan.
2. Exfoliating gloves
These are a great option for a fast exfoliation you can do on the day of your tan. Like the scrub, please don’t use then on your face. The skin on your face is a lot more delicate than your body and it can end up very sensitised if you do.
3. Body scrubs
Any type of body scrub should do the job. If you have an oil based one, do it the day before your tan.
4. Face exfoliation
You face is a lot more delicate than your body, so you should never use a body product on it. If you have an exfoliant you normally use on your face, use it on either the day you plan to tan or the day before to prep your skin. If you have a sensitive skin and prefer not to exfoliate your face, don’t worry the step isn’t crucial. If you are a little sensitised, I recommend doing a patch test with the tan on your face before to apply.
